It’s time for Five Minute Friday again, where a bunch of amazing writers and bloggers file up behind our daring leader Kate and take the plunge to write about a one word prompt for five minutes. This week, Kate handed us the prompt “prepare”.
It’s not a very typical Advent message, the one God has been speaking over me these days. But I’m going with it, because, you know, God.
So clearly I hear Him saying: “I go to PREPARE a place for you.”
He is turning the tables on me again. my Jesus, the Table Turner.
It’s easier when it is about me having to do the preparing. I get to be in charge, decide what needs to be done, a plow through my spiritual to-do list LIKE A BOSS.
Except when I don’t.
Like all those times I make myself check lists for how to assure I meet the “good girl” standard and disciplinary strategies to give myself the right to be called a “real” writer, and quotas of good deeds to be done to keep my motivations in check.
And then I fail and I fall short and I flail around feeling unprepared and unworthy to be in His presence.
So He does something radical this Advent and flips the script on me.
“It’s not about you preparing for me,” He whispers. “Let’s talk about how I am preparing for you, my love.”
“Everywhere you go, every calling you step into, every task you take on in my name, I go before you to prepare that place for you.
And it is a wide and spacious place with room for you — to breathe, to grow, to mess up and make up and start again.
They do not bind or constrict or cast down.
When you walk where I have already been before you, the sky shines with grace, the grass is soft with tenderness and the air breathes life into your bones.”
The Babe in the manger is the Ascended One. He who slept on the straw bed now sits on the throne of the Kingdom.
He walks before me.
Preparing the way of the Lord.
I have only to follow His footsteps.
